Anna – Virginia Maternity Portraits

I met beautiful Anna while at a retreat for film photographers earlier this month. She is five months pregnant and happily allowed me to capture a few portraits of her while we had some down-time. She is an incredible photographer, so be sure to check out her work here!

The rectangular images were photographed on 35mm Portra 160 using a Nikon F100 and a 50mm lens. The square format images were photographed on 120 Portra 400 using a Hasselblad 500c/m and a 50mm lens. They were all developed and scanned by North Coast Photographic Services.

Film Friday – Shooting the Stars

Last weekend, I spent some time in the freezing Virginia air with Tricia Burrough of Lilac Blossom Photography so we could capture the night sky. Tricia graciously let me use her digital camera as a light meter so I could try to guess at the exposure for these images. These were photographed on Portra 400 that North Coast Photo then pushed two stops. The exposures were made for about 30 seconds each at f/4 using a 50mm lens. I was using the camera in bulb mode and estimating the exposure time, since I thought the film wouldn’t be able to capture much information after several seconds anyway, due to reciprocity. They were all as crooked as this first one, but I straightened them in Lightroom (except the first one). I love it crooked because you can see the shadows of Tricia, my camera on its tripod, and me (left to right) in the foreground. When I straighten the image (as in the third photo), the camera’s shadow is lost. :) Next time, I’ll have to use a level to make sure my camera is straight!

Welcome Home, Jason!

Amanda and I had been in contact for months before Jason’s return. Though the USS Peliliu was scheduled to return earlier in December, the ship had a setback and its return was put on hold, without a firm return date available. Luckily, the ship pulled in right in the nick of time–on Christmas Eve!–so the Sailors on board were able to spend the holidays with their families!

Negative Space

Last night’s storm provided glorious clouds and color as the sun set on the horizon. It apparently snowed here in Southern California in areas that are more inland than where we are!

Chelsea & Matthew – Livermore Engagement Session

I met up with Chelsea and Matt for the first time almost a year ago. They each brought their mom with them, and it was awesome to learn about not only the two of them but also their fun families that chilly morning! We had actually been in touch for several months by that time, so it was amazing to finally meet these two!

At that meeting, I learned that Chelsea and Matt were planning a move from San Diego up to Livermore, CA, where some of Matt’s family is. Chelsea had visited Livermore when Matt lived there previously, so she thought it would be a great place for their engagement session, and I couldn’t agree more! We visited downtown Livermore, a few public parks, and a winery out in the county for these images, including a handful after dark!

After our nighttime session, Chelsea and Matt were kind enough to enlighten me on the amazingness that is CREAM. It was so delicious and fun! I loved it so much that I had to include this iPhone photo of my yummy ice cream sandwich in this post! This sandwich is made of two snickerdoodle cookies and salted caramel ice cream. And don’t worry–it’s all gluten free! :)
