Friendship – A Key to Thriving in Business

Last weekend, the fabulous Kori of Kori Smith Photography gathered a group of local photographers to get together for lunch up in Havelock, North Carolina. We chatted about photography as well as running a business. Taxes, expenses, business licenses, websites, blogs, Facebook pages, and contracts were discussed. Kori even provided handouts for all attendees! Kori organized this lunch (for free!) because she has a heart of gold and I truly value her friendship! (You may recognize her from these photos because she and I both are Type 1 Diabetics!)

Kori’s generosity is just an example of what I believe is at the heart of many creative entrepreneurs today. We are no longer simply in business for ourselves, but instead thrive when our friends thrive as well. And friendship is only the beginning! Kindness goes a long way too.

Contrary to what some typical businessmen may think, getting together with other photographers has always been a big part of my business. I don’t see them as competition but rather as confidants, advisors, and–perhaps most importantly–friends. The friendships I have fostered with other photographers have been some of the most rewarding relationships I have, because I know they will always have my back. And who else would I rather refer work to when I’m booked (or on maternity leave) than a friend who is equally skilled behind the lens? No one. ;)

The ladies and gentleman in the following photos are all in the photography world in one way or another. Some of us have been in business for years while others are just thinking of starting a business. What I love about this group is that we are all willing to share knowledge with each other, and lift each other up when needed. Though we don’t get together in person as much as we’d sometimes like, we interact online regularly, which fosters true relationships.

Happy New Year 2016!

This year, I’ve been inspired by Joyce Kang (and her article on Little Bellows) to photograph a 365 project on film.

What’s a 365 project? A 365 project can vary depending on the artist, but, in short, it’s a daily journal expressed in photographs. I’m intending to create at least one photograph every day using an analog format (35mm, 110, or 120 film, or using my Instax or Fuji instant film) and also posting one photograph taken on analog format to my Instagram account. Technically, this year, it’ll be a 366 project, but I’m not counting. (Yay leap year!)

Since today is January 1, I photographed (and will post, as soon as I complete this blog entry) the following photo on my Instagram account.

New Year's toast on Instax film

Because film takes a while to develop, I’ll be starting this year with a mix of instant film and a few photos taken last month. Once my developing schedule catches up, I plan to post images mostly sequentially through the year, though, save for instant photos, they obviously won’t be posted the same day that the image was taken.

Join me on Instagram to follow my year in photos, and let me know if you’re starting one as well! :)

xoxo,
Lauren

Welcome Home! – MCAS Miramar Homecoming

Dad was gone for too long before making his long trip back to California. After being stuck en route for what seemed like forever, he was free to come home! His family was anxiously awaiting his return and is so relieved that he’s back!

Palomar Mountain State Park with Seattle Film Works

Several months ago, fellow film photographer Gretchen Willis of Gretchen Willis Photography came upon a stash of old, expired film from Seattle Film Works. She was generous enough to share it with photographers across the nation, and I’m so glad I got to experiment with a roll!

I took mine camping with my pup, Cash, while I participated in a tintype workshop at Palomar Mountain State Park. The workshop itself was amazing, and playing with this new (to me) film stock was a treat! I was afraid that nothing would turn out, but it was fun to see the results–some with red tones, some with a lot of grain, some on the darker side–they look like they were printed in a newspaper!

After you’re done checking out these photos, take a look at Erin Neace & Beth Bevelhymer’s fun images with SFW here!
