Fall 2014

I’m pretty sure it’s still summer out here in Southern California (judging by the temperatures) but it’s apparently fall in other parts of the nation and Halloween is upon us. This year, my husband’s cousins staged a virtual pumpkin carving contest: we each were challenged to carve a pumpkin and send in photographic evidence by email. We chose a desert scene and, though I cleaned out the inside of the gourd, my husband managed the design and cutting.

I’m excited to be sharing these images as part of a blog circle with “Fall” as the theme for the month! Follow along the circle and check out D.C. Area Wedding Photographer Angela Powell Woulfe’s take on the theme here!

And since the newest member of our family recently found herself in the kitchen sink for a bath, here’s evidence of that, too! ;)

Seeing the world in Black and White

Black and white photographs can be so powerful. Something about removing color from our world allows us to focus on the essence of an image, which really pulls at our emotions. Though I love photographing on black and white film, I find that I often envision certain digital images in black and white, and then convert them while editing. One of my favorite images I’ve ever made was converted to black and white in post processing, which allows the viewer to focus on the details of the image, from the texture of his skin to the highlight in his eye:

Stanley, 2012.

Sometimes digital photographers can feel stuck while photographing on black and white film because it’s not possible to switch back to color. (I know I’ve felt that way before!) Photographing on film helps me slow down to really perfect an image before firing the shutter, and I’ve found that photographing on black and white film helps me focus even more. I don’t have the opportunity to photograph the world as I see it, but rather must evaluate the scene and consider how the resulting image will read in monochromatic tones.

When photographing this session with Jordan, I was exploring film photography for portraits and had packed my medium format camera and some black and white film to try it out. When I got the scans back from the lab, I was really disappointed because I loved my color (digital) images so much more. Now, looking back, I think I prefer these black and white images. ;)

Here are a few more recent images that I converted to black and white from color digital files. These are from a lifestyle newborn session from last month.

Summer 2014

I’ve mentioned previously that I’ve been photographing on film more this summer. Here’s an update of our summer so far, all shot on film. These include a BBQ at photographer friends Josh and Melissa Mitchell‘s casa, Starbucks planning meeting and drink making for Vows & Valor, delicious wine drinking and hanging out with friends in Temecula, and seeing Katie’s husband’s ship pull out of the San Diego harbor from Cabrillo National Monument. The 35mm (rectangular) images were photographed on Fuji Superia 800, rated at 1600 and pushed on stop in the developer. The 120 (square) images were photographed on Kondak TriX 400, rated at 800 and also pushed one stop.

This post is part of a ladies’ blog circle showcasing our summers so far! Be sure to check out the next link in the circle: “Our Summer (so far)” by Virginia lifestyle photographer Misty Smith!

Back to Film

You may or may not have noticed that I’ve been posting a little more work on film here and there. Though my love for photography was started before digital cameras were available, I switched to digital when I got my first DSLR in 2007. A couple years ago, I started playing around with film again when my dad brought a couple cameras to our family reunion. I decided to sign up for an online film workshop, Embrace the Grain, this summer, so that I would become more intentional with my film work. I have really enjoyed it and look forward to many more rolls of film goodness in the future. :) Thank you, Joyce, for your amazing workshop!

Here are some recent samples of work, photographed on my Hasselblad 500 C/M, using Kodak Ektar 100 film. I’m posting these as part of a blog circle with other Film Mama’s, so please check out the next blog in the circle: Brenda Smith of lilly lane photography!

Published: The Denim+Grace 2014 Posebook

Several weeks ago, a friend posted in a Facebook group about Denim+Grace‘s call for submissions for their 2014 Posebook. I rarely submit my images to competitions, let alone magazines, but read the editor’s statement about the Posebook and was totally intrigued.

Denim+Grace is “a photography magazine created to inspire, evoke and encourage photographers of all genres.” The magazine was created by photographers for photographers, so you know the issues are absolutely gorgeous! I love that both big-name and lesser-known photographers’ content is shared in each publication, and articles include all sorts of great info regarding owning and running a successful photography business.

Back to the Posebook… The 2014 Posebook is truly a collaboration from many artists (158 to be exact!) who submitted images for publication. The photos show many genres of photography, from maternity and newborn sessions, to family and senior sessions, to couples’ sessions, to wedding photography, to boudoir and glamour sessions. The Posebook was created to “celebrate people photography” and features its readers’ work to do so.

Back in the middle of April, I submitted images to be included in the Posebook and waited as patiently as I could to find out if any had been chosen for the issue. At the end of the month, I traveled to Texas to photograph Keeli & Kevin’s gorgeous wedding, and stayed at my parents’ house for a couple nights before the wedding. I was standing in the kitchen when I noticed I had gotten a few new emails. I was so surprised when I opened my inbox and saw a few emails with the following subject: “Denim+Grace Magazine 2014 PoseBook Acceptance”! I turned to my dad and said something along the lines of, “I have some photos that are going to be in a magazine!” At the time, I knew that images had been accepted into the Family, Wedding, and Boudoir/Glamour categories, but I didn’t know which ones had been accepted, nor did I know that it wasn’t just one image per category that were going to be published.

Fast forward a few more weeks until the launch of the Posebook, and I eagerly downloaded the PDF copy as soon as I could. I did a search for my last name in the book and was shocked to see that it appeared on 8 pages! That’s right… eight of my images were selected to be published! WOW! I went ahead and ordered a printed copy of the magazine and was thrilled when it arrived in my mailbox last week. Here are some images I took of the printed magazine, that I paired with my original versions of the photos that were published. :) *Please note that other photographers’ work is also shown in this post, when one of my images appeared adjacent to other photos. Further, the cover image was taken by Elizabeth James.
