Labor Day 2011

What better way to spend Labor Day than hanging out with two fellow Marine wives who are also photographers?! Yeah, that’s what I thought! :)

Yesterday, I met up with my friends Stephanie and Yvonne at Love Boat Sushi for lunch, then we headed over to Yvonne’s house to play around with some studio lights she has. We used their daughters as models and I did my best to show them how to use a two-light setup for portraits. I may have gotten a little distracted by all the little ones in the room, but we had a fun afternoon nonetheless!

Here are just a handful of the shots I captured.

Aren’t they just darling?! :)

Happy Tails for JJ

Hey Everyone!

I hope you’re having a wonderful summer so far! It’s actually been on the warmer side of things here in SoCal, and I’ve been soaking it up as much as possible!

I wanted to let you know about an awesome fundraiser that Angela of Powell Woulfe Photography is organizing for a military family.

JJ Proffitt is an adorable three-year-old who was diagnosed with autism just under a year ago. In addition to showing communication symptoms, JJ exhibits concerning behaviors such as throwing himself off furniture and escaping from the family’s home. JJ’s mother, Kristin, discovered Autism Service Dogs of America (ASDA) earlier this year and immediately applied for a service dog for JJ. The Proffitt family has been approved for a service dog, and is now in the process of raising the $13,500 it will take to raise and train the dog to suit JJ’s needs. Kristin believes that the service dog may provide JJ a sense of security and a measure of safety. You can read testimonials from families who were recipients of ASDA dogs here.

Joshua, JJ’s father, is serving as an active-duty Sergeant in the United States Army. With a year-long deployment in the near future, the Proffitt family is hoping to obtain the service dog prior to Joshua’s departure. There’s no question that deployments cause an immeasurable about of stress on family members left behind, and I’m certain that having a service dog will help JJ thrive during his daddy’s next tour.

This is where Angela’s fundraiser comes to play. :)

On Sunday, July 24, Angela is gathering a group of photographers (including myself) to donate their time and take affordable, professional portraits of families at the Orange County Photography Center in Brea, CA. Clients will recieve a mini-session (15 minutes in length) for up to 4 people, with a suggested donation of $25. After the event, the photographers will choose 5 photographs of each family to upload to an online viewing gallery, with the option of purchasing affordably-priced prints and downloads. We’ll be shooting from 10am until 5pm, and you can reserve a spot by calling Angela at 760-317-9752.

What: Happy Tails for JJ – A Portrait Benefit Event
When: 10am – 5pm on Sunday, July 24

Baby Elijah – FDR Memorial, Washington, DC

Last Friday, I drove up to Washington, DC, to meet up with my friend Kenan and take some photos of her adorable 6-month-old son, Elijah. I met Kenan when I worked for an architecture firm in DC two years ago. She had contacted me several weeks ago, looking for a referral for a photographer to capture her son since I was in California. Luckily for me (and her!) I knew I was going to be out on this coast soon, and I set aside time to hang out with the two of them.

We met up at the Franklin Delano Roosevelt Memorial, which is on (what I thought was) the not-so-crowded side of the Tidal Basin. Here are some of my favorites from our morning together!

Oh man! Look at the look he’s giving the camera right here! Hello, heartbreaker!

Big thanks to Kenan for letting me capture her precious son! He was a total trooper! He only cried once during the entire shoot, and it was at the end. (He was tired and hungry… I was relating.)

Happy Wednesday, everyone!

Lauren

The G Family

Check out this fun family!

Sonnia and I are volunteers for a Marine Spouse group at Camp Pendleton, and I bothered her for a few months to get out in front of my camera. An opportunity for us to get together sprang up over the weekend and I jumped at the chance to meet up with her, Brad, and their two handsome sons at the Oceanside Pier for a short session! Nevermind the 49ers jerseys they’re wearing.. This family was a hoot to shoot!

 Isn’t Sonnia just gorgeous?!?
“The pointing shot.” Sonnia and Brad’s older son kept throwing his fingers up, so I asked them all to do it for a shot. Check out little J! He had no idea he was the only one pointing in the opposite direction, and his expression is priceless!
I love it when a family has a little fun during their session!
Thank you, Sonnia and Brad, for (finally!) allowing me to capture you and your awesome kids!

Help Portrait 2010

If you read my last post or if you’ve been following my tweets recently, you already know that I spent last Saturday with the awesome Help-Portrait San Diego crew. We rocked our portraits this year, and it was SO exciting to participate again!

We started out at St. Clare’s Home in Escondido in the morning, where our fearless leader, Jamie, had this amazing spread set up for the families! Hello, delicious!

The fabulous Chriselda had collected all of these stuffed animals, and each child was able to pick one to take home! How awesome is that?!?
We then moved to Solutions for Change in Vista for our afternoon sessions. SFC is where I participated last year, so it was fun to see some familiar faces among the staff and families!

All in all, it was a GREAT day for all of us! Following are a couple shots of fellow volunteers from the SD crew. (We used each other to test our set-ups before the families came in.)
Child prodigy, Graham:
and Chic-Fil-A rocker Ryan:
Thanks again to all of the volunteers who made Help-Portrait 2010 a huge success! I can’t wait until next year’s event! I’ve already marked my calendar: 03 December 2011!
