2015 Resolutions

I somehow have an aversion to the word “resolution.” The definition, according to dictionary.reference.com, includes:

noun

1. a formal expression of opinion or intention made,usually after voting, by a formal organization, a legislature, a club, or other group.

2. the act of resolving or determining upon an action, course of action, method, procedure, etc.

3. a resolve; a decision or determination: to make a firm resolution to do something.

In fact, I don’t usually make any goals or resolutions at the beginning of this year. But, for 2015, I do have some goals I’d like to accomplish.

1. Travel with our dog!

We have a dog now and I plan to take some camping road trips with her this summer. We took her on a “staycation” at the beginning of the year and she couldn’t get enough of sitting on the hotel’s king-sized bed.

Anna – Virginia Maternity Portraits

I met beautiful Anna while at a retreat for film photographers earlier this month. She is five months pregnant and happily allowed me to capture a few portraits of her while we had some down-time. She is an incredible photographer, so be sure to check out her work here!

The rectangular images were photographed on 35mm Portra 160 using a Nikon F100 and a 50mm lens. The square format images were photographed on 120 Portra 400 using a Hasselblad 500c/m and a 50mm lens. They were all developed and scanned by North Coast Photographic Services.

Film Friday – Shooting the Stars

Last weekend, I spent some time in the freezing Virginia air with Tricia Burrough of Lilac Blossom Photography so we could capture the night sky. Tricia graciously let me use her digital camera as a light meter so I could try to guess at the exposure for these images. These were photographed on Portra 400 that North Coast Photo then pushed two stops. The exposures were made for about 30 seconds each at f/4 using a 50mm lens. I was using the camera in bulb mode and estimating the exposure time, since I thought the film wouldn’t be able to capture much information after several seconds anyway, due to reciprocity. Sidenote: Click this link if you want to know more about film reciprocity.

They were all as crooked as this first one, but I straightened them in Lightroom (except the first one). I love it crooked because you can see the shadows of Tricia, my camera on its tripod, and me (left to right) in the foreground. When I straighten the image (as in the third photo), the camera’s shadow is lost. :) Next time, I’ll have to use a level to make sure my camera is straight!
