Mini Session Flash Sale Fundraiser for JDRF 2016 from San Antonio family portrait photographer Lauren Nygard

Why JDRF?

Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas loses the ability to produce insulin. Insulin, a hormone, turns food into energy. T1D strikes both children and adults suddenly, unrelated to a person’s diet and lifestyle. Managing T1D requires constant carbohydrate counting, blood-glucose testing, and lifelong dependence on injected insulin.

T1D impacts millions of American adults and children, and I am one of those people. I’ve struggled with the enormous burden of this disease every day since my diagnosis at age 4. This year marks 31 years of living with T1D!

JDRF is the leading global organization funding promising research for Type 1 Diabetes, and JDRF’s mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent and treat T1D and its complications.

Friendship – A Key to Thriving in Business

Last weekend, the fabulous Kori of Kori Smith Photography gathered a group of local photographers to get together for lunch up in Havelock, North Carolina. We chatted about photography as well as running a business. Taxes, expenses, business licenses, websites, blogs, Facebook pages, and contracts were discussed. Kori even provided handouts for all attendees! Kori organized this lunch (for free!) because she has a heart of gold and I truly value her friendship! (You may recognize her from these photos because she and I both are Type 1 Diabetics!)

Kori’s generosity is just an example of what I believe is at the heart of many creative entrepreneurs today. We are no longer simply in business for ourselves, but instead thrive when our friends thrive as well. And friendship is only the beginning! Kindness goes a long way too.

Contrary to what some typical businessmen may think, getting together with other photographers has always been a big part of my business. I don’t see them as competition but rather as confidants, advisors, and–perhaps most importantly–friends. The friendships I have fostered with other photographers have been some of the most rewarding relationships I have, because I know they will always have my back. And who else would I rather refer work to when I’m booked (or on maternity leave) than a friend who is equally skilled behind the lens? No one. ;)

The ladies and gentleman in the following photos are all in the photography world in one way or another. Some of us have been in business for years while others are just thinking of starting a business. What I love about this group is that we are all willing to share knowledge with each other, and lift each other up when needed. Though we don’t get together in person as much as we’d sometimes like, we interact online regularly, which fosters true relationships.

Mini Session Flash Sale – Support JDRF

Last week, I met up with a few fellow Type 1 Diabetics for a fun photo session showing off the hardware required to maintain our health with this disease. Meeting up with others battling Type 1 Diabetes is always a treat, because it helps us realize that we’re not the only ones facing this daily struggle. After the session, I thought it’d be a great idea to have a mini session flash sale to support Type 1 Diabetes research! Last year, my headshot fundraiser for JDRF was a huge success (thank you to my supporters!) so I decided to mix it up a little for 2016. :)

Welcome Home, Thomas!

The blog circle members decided the theme for this month–Red, White and Blue–well over a month ago. When I arrived at the hangar at Cherry Point and met Lacey, I knew this military homecoming was going to be perfect to share on the blog today!

The heat was scorching that day on the tarmac, but nothing kept this family’s spirits down. We waited in the hangar until it was time for the aircrafts’ arrival, when everyone cheered and moved out to greet their loved ones! Lacey almost had to hold her kids back from running out there as the planes taxied to their parking spots. Finally, the three boys were able to run out to hug their Dad! This military homecoming brought many of us to tears (happy tears, of course)! And check out the shirts the boys wore–they painted the flags themselves! Aren’t they the cutest?! Mom’s dress was perfect for the occasion, too!

Welcome home, Thomas, and all of the Marines and Sailors of VMGR-252!

USMC Homecoming at Camp Lejeune

“It’s hard being left behind… It’s hard to be the one who stays.”
–Audrey Niffenegger, The Time Traveler’s Wife

This Marine Corps homecoming, like many others, took place in the wee hours of a Saturday morning. Though the Marines arrived to nearby MCAS Cherry Point around midnight, they were released at Camp Lejeune just about an hour before sunrise! As if their families hadn’t waited long enough for them to return, waiting past the midnight hour seemed most excruciating. (Hot dogs and chips can only hold you over for so long!)

Eventually, the Marines were released from the armory and bused over to this homecoming location! Then, in a flash, everyone unloaded from the buses! In that very moment, anxiety melted into joy as the Marines united with their families.
