I’ve mentioned previously that I’ve been photographing on film more this summer. Here’s an update of our summer so far, all shot on film. These include a BBQ at photographer friends Josh and Melissa Mitchell‘s casa, Starbucks planning meeting and drink making for Vows & Valor, delicious wine drinking and hanging out with friends in Temecula, and seeing Katie’s husband’s ship pull out of the San Diego harbor from Cabrillo National Monument. The 35mm (rectangular) images were photographed on Fuji Superia 800, rated at 1600 and pushed on stop in the developer. The 120 (square) images were photographed on Kondak TriX 400, rated at 800 and also pushed one stop.

The Costello Family

This amazing family is celebrating a milestone this month and asked me to come along to document it. Mom Harmony is also a photographer, so I knew she’d help me find an awesome spot for these portraits, and she didn’t disappoint! We had lots of fun talking about stinky feet and their sweet new sister, little G. It was such an honor to capture these images for them!

Harmony and I were both reminiscing about our dads’ darkrooms in our homes as kids, so be sure to scroll to the end for some images captured on film! :) These were photographed on Portra 400.

Marine Corps Homecoming at the San Diego Airport

Welcome home to this wonderful Marine and congratulations to his family on reaching the end of this deployment! Though little Q seemed more interested in the traffic outside than on giving Daddy a hug right away, soon enough she rested her head on his shoulder and simply would not let go. It was such a sweet moment, and I’m so happy to have captured it for this family!

Kim & Ivan – Lake Hodges Engagement Session

Getting to hang out with these two while photographing some casual portraits before their upcoming wedding was perfect! Though both Kim and Ivan are from Southern California, they met while in training in my hometown of San Antonio. Both are outdoors enthusiasts, so meeting up at beautiful Lake Hodges made perfect sense for this session! It was fun to chat about upcoming road trip and camping plans to see National Parks across the southwestern states, while exploring the hiking trails of Escondido. I so look forward to capturing their big day!

Back to Film

You may or may not have noticed that I’ve been posting a little more work on film here and there. Though my love for photography was started before digital cameras were available, I switched to digital when I got my first DSLR in 2007. A couple years ago, I started playing around with film again when my dad brought a couple cameras to our family reunion. I decided to sign up for an online film workshop, Embrace the Grain, this summer, so that I would become more intentional with my film work. I have really enjoyed it and look forward to many more rolls of film goodness in the future. :) Thank you, Joyce, for your amazing workshop!

Here are some recent samples of work, photographed on my Hasselblad 500 C/M, using Kodak Ektar 100 film. I’m posting these as part of a blog circle with other Film Mama’s, so please check out the next blog in the circle: Brenda Smith of lilly lane photography!
